鞣 [róu] 1. (noun) 【鞣酸】 An organic compound, a light yellow powder with a slight odor. It is used industrially to make ink and to tan leather, and can also be used as medicine. Also known as "tannin" or "tannic acid". 2. (verb) When manufacturing leather, using materials such as pyrogallol and fish oil to soften animal hides. Example: 鞣制 (to tan); 鞣皮子 (tanned leather). 3. (verb) Tan leather (En. tan). 4. (verb) Also means the same as "蹂" (to rack). 引 (reference): 1. According to "Shuo Wen Jie Zi": 鞣 means to soften (耎). It is composed of the radicals for leather (革) and softness (柔), with softness also being phonetic. Xu Kai states: "The softness of leather." Example: 又如: 鞣皮子 (tanned leather); 鞣料 (tanning materials). 引 (reference): 1. From Tang Dynasty Han Yu's "Inscription of King Cao Cheng": 大鞣长平 (Great racking is long and flat).
