Small bean ([En.] red bean) - Example: 《晋书》: 菽、荅、麻、麦一斛 (Beans, red beans, hemp, and wheat in a measure). 2. Referring to "渠荅," a type of defensive tool ([En.] ironware resembling puncture vine), also known as "铁蒺藜." - Example: 《墨子·备城门》: 二步一荅,广九尺,袤十二尺 (Every two steps, there is a 笫, 9 feet wide and 12 feet long). 3. A capacity unit ([En.] a capacity unit). - Example: 《史记·货殖列传》: 蘖曲盐豉千荅 (Thousand 荅 of seedlings, curved salt and beans). 荅 [dá] (verb) 1. To agree; to respond. It later became "答" (【En】: answer). - Example: 《书·洛诰》: 奉荅天命,和恒四方民,居师 (Accept the heavenly mandate, harmoniously unite the people in all directions and reside in the army). - Example: 《汉书·郊祀志》: 不荅不飨 (If not responded, there is no enjoyment).
