蕨 [jué] 名 1. Brake (蕨菜): A large category of plants, mostly herbaceous and rarely woody, characterized by roots, stems, and leaves, reproducing by spores, commonly found in moist and shaded areas of forests and mountains, such as "蕨" and "石松". 2. A perennial herbaceous plant with long rhizomes. Tender leaves are edible, and the rhizomes can be processed into starch. Its fibers can be made into ropes and cables, and they are water-resistant. The whole plant can be used in medicine. 引 1. "说文" mentions: 蕨, meaning tortoise, which is derived from the radical for grass (艸) and the sound 'jué'. 2. It is noted that when young, the plant resembles garlic shoots, lacks leaves, and looks like tortoise feet; hence named. It also resembles a child's fist, which is why it is called fist vegetable (拳菜), appearing purple-black in color. 3. From "齐民要术·蕨": 蕨 is a mountain vegetable. During the Zhou and Qin dynasties, it was called 蕨, and in Qi and Lu it was referred to as tortoise (鳖). 例 Examples: 密毛蕨 (Dense-haired brake); 欧洲蕨 (European brake); 蕨手 (referring to the bracken shoots); 蕨拳 (referring to the bracken shoots); 蕨萁 (bracken sprouts); 蕨薇 (brake and vetch, both mountain vegetables, often mentioned together to denote wild greens).
