莖 (jīng)
1. See "茎" (jiāng).
2. (Noun) The main part of the above-ground portion of a plant. It is the necessary conduit for transporting substances within the plant body and serves as the primary support organ. Based on shape and structure, it can be classified into herbaceous and woody types. The main stem of herbaceous plants is weak, with both height and thickness limited during growth; in contrast, the main stem of woody plants is thick and prominent.
3. The handle or stalk of an object. In "Zhou Li: Dongguan Kao Gong Ji: Tao Shi," it states: "Use its fat to make the stem, surrounding it twice its length." Han Dynasty - Zheng Xuan's commentary: "Fat refers to two blades. The stem is that which is in between."
4. A measure word. Used to count slender, stick-like objects. For example: "A few sprigs of grass." Tang Dynasty - Du Fu's "Song of the Pleasure Garden": "How can a few sprigs of white hair be discarded? Even a hundred deep cups of punishment I would not refuse."
