蓮 (lián)
1. A perennial herb that grows in shallow water. The leaves are large and round. The flowers are big and come in pink and white colors. The seeds are called "莲子" (lián zǐ) and are enclosed in an inverted conical flower receptacle, collectively referred to as "莲蓬" (lián péng). The underground stem is thick and long, with nodes, and is called "藕" (ǒu). Both the seeds and the underground stem are edible (also known as "荷" (hé), "芙蓉" (fú róng), "芙蕖" (fú qú), "菡萏" (hàn dàn)).
