蝦 (xiā)
1. A type of crustacean with a shell and many segments in its abdomen. They live in water and come in many varieties.
- Example: 虾皮 (dried shrimp), 虾米 (tiny dried shrimp), 虾子 (shrimp eggs), 虾兵蟹将 (refers to ineffective soldiers, literally "shrimp soldiers and crab generals").
2. Noun, animal name. Belongs to the class of crustaceans in the phylum Arthropoda. It has a long tail divided into head, thorax, and abdomen. The head has two pairs of antennae of different lengths; the thorax has five pairs of legs; the abdomen is long and segmented, each segment having a pair of swimmerets for swimming. They live in water and there are many edible species. Commonly referred to as "虾子" (shrimp).
