How to write 諳

諳: 1. See "谙" (ān). 2. Verb: To be familiar with, to know. Example: "不谙水性" (not familiar with swimming). Tang Dynasty, Wang Jian, "New Bride's Song" (third of three): "未谙姑食性, 先遣小姑尝" (Not familiar with the aunt's eating habits, so let the younger aunt taste first). "The Travels of Lao Can," Volume 14: "只因但会读书, 不谙世故, 举手动足便错" (Only because he knows how to read, but is not familiar with the ways of the world, he makes mistakes with every gesture). 3. Verb: To memorize, to recite. "Book of the Later Han," Volume 33, Biography of Yu Yan: "其陵树株櫱, 皆谙其数" (The number of trees in the tomb, all are memorized).
