鴇: 1. Name of a bird. It has a small head, a long neck, and a body slightly larger than that of a goose. The back is patterned with yellow-brown and black. It is good at running but not at flying. The more common species is the Great Bustard, also known as "地鵏" (Dìnǐ). It typically inhabits grassland areas, spending summers in the northeastern part of Inner Mongolia and the western part of the three northeastern provinces, migrating to North China in winter. In the "Book of Songs, Tang Feng, 鴇羽": "肃肃鴇羽,集于苞栩。" Lu Deming's commentary states: "鴇, similar to a goose but larger, has no tail feathers." In Tang poet Du Fu's "Jubai Crossing": "In rushing streams, the 鴇鷁 scatter, with proud turtles on the banks." "Liaoshi, Shenzong Records II": "Offering 自落鴇 to Heaven and Earth through a close servant, Nian Mili." 2. In ancient times, referred to an old prostitute running a brothel or a false mother of a prostitute. Ming dynasty Zhu Quan wrote in "Danqiu Mr. Qu Lun" VIII: "The older prostitutes are called 鴇." In "Jing Shi Tong Yan, Du Shiniang Anger Sank Hundred Treasures": "Shiniang saw the 鴇'er greedy and unprincipled, and had long aspired to be virtuous." Xu Ke in "Qing Bai Lei Chao, Marriage Section": "The 鴇 forced the brothel owner to grieve in Baoshan, wishing to send her daughter home." 3. A horse with a mixed coat of black and white. Also written as "鴇". In "Book of Songs, Zheng Feng, Da Shu on the Field": "On the field, riding the 鴇." The commentary says: "The mixed black and white horse is called 鴇." Lu Deming's commentary states: "鴇, according to the character, is pronounced as 'bàng'." Chen Huan's commentary elucidates: "A mixed coat of black and white indicates a black horse with some white hairs, thus it is called 'bàng' horse. The color resembles the 鴇 bird, hence its name in relation to the bird."
