1. An ancient river name (Bian River). Formerly known as Bian Shui, referring to the southwestern area of the Suo River in present-day Xingyang County, Henan Province. During the Sui Dynasty, the Kaifeng Canal was opened, and the section from present-day Xingyang to Kaifeng was the original Bian Shui.
2. An ancient prefecture name (Bian Prefecture). Established from Liangzhou during the Northern Zhou Dynasty, with its administrative center in Junyi (now Kaifeng City). The Liang Dynasty of the Five Dynasties established its capital here, later elevated to Kaifengfu. It also served as a capital during the Five Dynasties, Jin, Han, Zhou, and the Northern Song Dynasty. Commonly referred to as Bianliang or Bianjing. It is now a shorthand for Kaifeng City.
