2. General term for fish in the order Siluriformes, family Siluridae. They have large, flat heads, wide mouths, and four long whiskers on the upper and lower jaws. They are scaleless, with skin that is often covered in mucus. The back is dark gray, the belly is white, and the spines on the dorsal and pectoral fins are poisonous. There are about 2,500 species, distributed worldwide. They live in rivers, lakes, and marshes, resting on the bottom mud during the day and coming out at night to feed on small fish, shellfish, frogs, and other organisms.
