曬 (shài) [verb] 【Basic meaning】: Expose to sunlight, i.e., to be in direct sunlight. 1. 暴曬;曬乾。 Expose to the sun; dry in the sun; bask. Example: 太陽曬得人喘不過氣來; 曬衣服; 曬席; 曬暖; 曬腹 (The sun made it hard for people to breathe; drying clothes; drying mats; basking in the sun for warmth; basking the belly). 2. 展現;照耀。 Show; shine. Example: 《漢書》:白日曬光,幽隱皆照。 (In the Book of Han: The bright sun's light illuminates everything, even the hidden). 3. 用同 “煞”。甚,極。 Used similarly to "煞," meaning very or extremely. Example: 大王夫人歡喜曬,因茲特地送資財。 (The queen was exceedingly pleased, so she sent gifts). 4. 〈方〉置之不理,慢待。 [Dialect] To ignore; to treat slowly. Example: 我被曬在那裏,心裏挺不是滋味。 (I was left hanging there, and it felt quite uncomfortable). 5. 用陽光或燈光印製。 Print by light. Example: 曬照片 (Develop photos using sunlight).
