Usage

莢 (jiá) 1. A type of plant fruit. It develops from a single ovary formed by one carpel. The fruit skin dries, becoming flat and long, splitting open along both sides; after splitting, the fruit skin forms two symmetrical pieces. Most legumes produce fruits in this way. For example: "bean pod" (豆莢), "soap pod" (皂莢). 2. "Elm pod" (榆莢). Referenced in the Song dynasty by Fan Chengda in the poem "Two Poems of Early Summer" (初夏詩二首之一): "Mulberry leaves expose branches as silkworms grow old, while vegetable flowers form pods as butterflies come flying." Also known as "leguminous fruit" (莢果). 3. A surname. For example, during the Spring and Autumn period, there was a person named Jia Chengxi (莢成僖子) from the Jin state.
