1. According to "Shuo Wen," 郰 (Zou) refers to a lower city in Lu. It is the hometown of Confucius. It is formed from the character for city and takes its sound from there. The character is also written as 鄹. In the northwestern part of today's Yanzhou Prefecture in Shandong, there are Dongzou Village and Xizou Community. Confucius was born in 郰's Queli and grew up in Qufu, which is still called Queli.
《说文》:郰,鲁下邑。孔子之乡。从邑,取声。字亦作鄹。在今山东兖州府邹县西北之东邹邨、西邹集、孔子生于郰之阙里,长徒曲阜,仍号阙里。
