也 [yě] 1. Adverb, indicating the meaning of similarity or parallel: 你去,我也去。 (You go, I also go.) 2. In negative sentences, it strengthens the tone: 一点儿也不错。 (Not bad at all.) 3. In compound sentences, it expresses a contrast: 虽然你不说,我也能猜个八九不离十。 (Even if you don't say it, I can still guess pretty close.) 4. Classical Chinese modal particle (1. to indicate judgment; 2. to indicate questioning; 3. to indicate pause; 4. following adjectives). 5. Indicates tolerance or acknowledgment of a certain situation: 也罢。 (Let's just say it's fine.) 6. Also expresses similarity: 亦表示同样 (En: also; too; as well; either). 7. Used in the end of a sentence to indicate judgment or affirming tone, similar to "ah" or "ya". 8. Used in a sentence to indicate a pause. 9. Used at the end of a sentence to indicate a question, similar to "ne" or "ma". 10. Used at the end of the first half of a sentence to indicate a pause, easing the tone, and the second half explains the first half with an emphasis. Examples: - 我高兴,你也高兴; 也可以; 也是. (I'm happy, you're also happy; it can be; it is also.) - 她会打篮球,也会打网球。 (She can play basketball, and she can also play tennis.) - 即使失败十次,他也不灰心。 (Even if he fails ten times, he does not lose heart.) - 我也只好如此。 (I also have no choice but to do so.) - 也须; 连老人也干活。 (One must also; even the elderly work.) - 你见我府里那个门子,却是多少年纪?或是黑瘦也白净肥胖? (You see the servant in my house, how old is he? Is he black and thin or white and fat?) - 少时之岁月为可惜也。 (The time spent in youth is worthy of regret.) - 如其读书也必专。 (If one knows good and bad, then he must focus on studying.) - 若为佣耕,何富贵也? (If one works as a laborer, how can he be prosperous?) - 于是人也,必先苦其心志… (Thus a person must first suffer in his heart and will...)
