The sixth position in the Heavenly Stems, used to denote the sixth in order. 己 [jǐ] 1. (Noun) The sixth of the ten Heavenly Stems. - Example: 甲乙丙丁戊己庚辛壬癸 (the ten Heavenly Stems). 己 [jǐ] 2. (Verb) Used as a substitute for “给” (give). - Example: 一二千两银子东西己人!叫他唱二万出戏我看了,己他一个! (With one or two thousand taels of silver, ask him to perform for me; he’ll give himself a show!) 己 [jǐ] - (Noun) The sixth of the ten Heavenly Stems. - (Usage in literature): 1. 知己知彼,百战不殆 (Knowing oneself and the enemy, one will never be in peril in a hundred battles). 2. 而己亦人也 (And oneself is also a person). 3. 自拟己头 (To interpret one’s own head). 4. 且噬己也 (And also bite oneself). 5. 不以己悲 (Not to feel sorrow for oneself). 6. 在己为有悔 (Regret for oneself). Examples: - 舍己为公 (sacrifice oneself for the public good), - 异己 (other people), - 克己 (self-discipline), - 知己 (understanding oneself), - 己身 (oneself), - 己私 (personal desires), - 己里钱 (blood and sweat money, private funds).
