侥 jiǎo 1. 〔~幸〕➊ To hope for something that should not be obtained, as in "to have a ~ psychological state." - [En.] To hope for something undeserved. ➋ To gain unexpected benefits or to escape misfortune unexpectedly, as in "to achieve ~ success." - [En.] To unexpectedly succeed or to gain fortune. 2. 贪求不止 - [En.] To be greedy for; to request endlessly. - Example: 不敢复有侥冀 (I dare not hope for any more). - Examples include: 侥速 (to be greedy for speed); 侥滥 (to insist on greedily obtaining benefits without following rules); 侥望 (excessive and unrealistic hopes for wealth). 3. 引申指希求意外成功或幸免 - [En.] To refer to seeking unexpected success or escape from misfortune. - Example: 此以人之国侥倖也 (This is fortunate for people from that country). - Examples include: 侥天之幸 (extreme luck); 侥利 (benefits gained through luck); 侥会 (a fortunate encounter). 4. 侥薄,即浇薄。指民俗浮薄 - [En.] Flighty; superficial. - Example: 不修廉隅以侥名当世 (Not cultivating integrity to gain recognition in the world). 5. 另见 yáo - [En.] See also yáo. 6. 见“僬” - [En.] See "僬." 7. 僥 yáo - [En.] Related to "僬侥" (jiāoyáo) state. - Example from historical texts: 南方有焦侥人,长三尺,短之极,从人,尧声 (In the south, there are people from Jiao Yao, three feet tall at most, short in stature, resembling those of the Yao sound). - Another example: 从中州以东,四十万里,得僬侥国 (To the east of Zhongzhou is the country of Jiao Yao). - Yet another example: 有小人,名曰焦侥之国 (There are small people, called the country of Jiao Yao). 8. 另见 jiǎo - [En.] See also jiǎo.
