症 (zhèng) 1. Disease; illness; symptom. Examples: 病症 (bìngzhèng) - illness; 症状 (zhèngzhuàng) - symptom; 症候 (zhènghòu) - syndrome; 不治之症 (bùzhìzhīzhèng) - an incurable disease; 对症下药 (duìzhèngxiàyào) - prescribe the right remedy for an ailment. 2. 疾病的表现和征兆。古音同“證”(disease; illness). 症 (zhèng) 1. Symptom; clinical manifestation. The classical form “證” is interchangeable with this character. 引用: 《五杂俎·物部三》 (Wuzazu · Section Three): Lychee seeds are too hot in nature, nourishing yin. Examples: 病症 (bìngzhèng) - manifestations of disease (note: "症" as used in ancient times was only written as "證," while the character "症" is a vernacular form in modern usage); 症坚 (zhèngjiān) - crucial issue; 症痼 (zhènggù) - an accumulation in the abdomen that has not dissipated for a long time; 症瘕 (zhèngjiá) - a lump in the abdomen; metaphorically referring to being narrow-minded and uninformed; 症噎 (zhèngyē) - a lump in the abdomen causing obstruction in the throat. 2.
